A CHAMPION IS BORN

Born on 30 June 1995 at Westmead Hospital in Sydney, but was raised in Wyong on the Central Coast of New South Wales Australia.

THE BLOODLINE

Jai Opetaia comes from a deep boxing lineage, making him a fourth-generation boxer on his father’s side and a third-generation boxer on his mother’s side.

His father played a central role in shaping his development, coaching and guiding him from a young age and ensuring he understood both the technical and mental demands of boxing.

THE FOUNDATION

His combat sports journey began in kickboxing, where he won his first fight at just eight years old, showing early talent and determination.

That victory sparked his passion for fighting and laid the foundation for his transition into boxing, where he would later rise. As jai continued his career, he set a goal – to be become an undisputed world champion, and continue his families legacy.

THE OLYMPICS

In 2012, Jai Opetaia became Australia’s youngest-ever Olympic boxer at just 16 years old after qualifying for the London Games through victories at the national and Oceania qualifiers.

He competed at the Olympics as a teenager, narrowly losing a close split-decision bout. He later represented Australia at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, gaining valuable international experience and strengthening his reputation as one of the country’s top amateur prospects.

THE BREAKOUT

In 2015, Jai made the decision to turn professional and fully commit to chasing his dream of becoming a world champion. Fight after fight, he built an undefeated record and earned a reputation.

His breakout moment came in July 2022 when he defeated long-reigning champion Mairis Briedis to win the IBF Cruiserweight World Championship and The Ring Cruiserweight title. During the fight, Jai suffered a broken jaw, but fought through immense pain to secure one of the toughest and most courageous victories in Australian boxing history.

THE FUTURE

Jai Opetaia has signed with Zuffa Boxing as part of the next stage of his career. He made his debut under the promotion earlier this year, winning and claiming the Zuffa title in the process. While the move opens the door to bigger global opportunities, Opetaia remains focused on staying at the top of the cruiserweight division and becoming the undisputed world champion, while honouring his family’s legacy.
